What Is Side Glass Replacement and Why Is It Urgent?

The back glass — also called the rear window, rear windshield, or back windshield — is the tempered glass panel at the rear of your vehicle. Unlike the front windshield, which is made of laminated safety glass, the rear window is typically single-layer tempered glass. When it breaks, it shatters into hundreds of small pebble-like pieces and cannot be repaired — it must be fully replaced. A damaged rear window is more than just an inconvenience. It compromises your vehicle’s structural integrity, exposes the interior to rain and theft, and in many cases disables your heated rear defroster and wiper system. In British Columbia, driving with a shattered back window may also result in a violation under the Motor Vehicle Act. At Avenue Auto Glass, our certified technicians handle back glass replacement for all vehicle makes and models — from compact sedans and SUVs to pickup trucks, minivans, and luxury vehicles — serving Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, North Vancouver, and the entire Lower Mainland.

Common causes of back glass damage

Vancouver break-in? Call us first.

After a vehicle break-in, call us immediately. We'll temporary-board your window while you wait for parts if needed, process your ICBC claim on-site, and have your side glass replaced — all in one visit. Don't leave your car unsecured.

All Side Glass Covered

Types of Side Glass We Replace

Every panel of glass on the sides of your vehicle is within our scope. We handle all types across all vehicle makes and models sold in Canada.

Front Door Window (Driver & Passenger)

The most commonly broken side glass — particularly after break-ins. We replace front door glass for sedans, SUVs, trucks, and minivans, including power-window channel fitting and weatherstripping restoration.

Rear Door Window

Four-door sedans and SUVs have rear door windows that slide or drop into the door frame. We replace all rear door glass configurations and reseat weatherstripping for a watertight seal.

Quarter Glass (Fixed)

The small triangular fixed glass panel behind the rear door on many sedans and SUVs. Often broken during break-ins as an entry point. We replace fixed quarter glass panels for all major brands.

Vent Glass (Front Triangular)

Small triangular glass in front of the front door on many vehicles. Also a common break-in target. We source and replace vent glass for all popular makes including Honda, Toyota, Ford, and GM.

Sliding Rear Door Glass (Minivans)

Minivan sliding doors have large glass panels that integrate with the door’s sliding mechanism. We handle all minivan side glass including Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica, and Dodge Grand Caravan.

Truck Cab & Rear Side Glass

Extended cab and crew cab trucks have additional rear side windows. We replace glass for Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Chevrolet Silverado, Toyota Tundra, and other popular BC trucks.

Why Avenue Auto Glass

Why Vancouver Drivers Choose Us for Side Glass

For over a decade, Lower Mainland drivers have trusted Avenue Auto Glass for their most urgent auto glass needs. Here’s what sets us apart.

Large In-Stock Inventory for BC's Most Popular Vehicles

We stock side glass for Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, Ford F-150, Hyundai Tuscon, Mazda CX-5, Subaru Outback, and other top-selling vehicles in BC — meaning same-day service in most cases.

ICBC Break-In Claims Processed On-Site

Vehicle break-ins are covered under ICBC Optional Comprehensive. We open your claim at our shop, bill ICBC directly, and limit your out-of-pocket expense to your deductible (or zero for some plans).

Weatherstripping Inspection Included

When side glass breaks, door weatherstripping is often damaged. We inspect all seals and replace damaged weatherstripping as part of the installation — preventing wind noise and water leaks.

Window Regulator Assessment

If your side window dropped due to a regulator failure (not a break-in), we'll diagnose and advise — and in many cases we can replace both the glass and the regulator in the same visit.

All Glass Fragments Removed

Tempered glass shatters into hundreds of fragments. Our technicians perform thorough vacuuming and cleaning inside the door panel and on door sills — leaving your vehicle free of dangerous glass pieces.

Lifetime Workmanship Warranty

Every side glass replacement is covered by our lifetime warranty against installation defects. If the seal leaks or the glass doesn't seat properly, we make it right at no charge.
