Fantastic experience from start to finish! Gave quote over the phone for a back glass on older model Mazda. Surprisingly had glass in stock at reasonable price. Made space for me same day and then completed the job in just 2.5 hours. Professional, friendly, and went above-and-beyond by helping charge my completely dead car battery! While I hope to not need their services again, I would go back to them in a heartbeat.
Expert Rear Window Service
What Is Back Glass Replacement and When Do You Need It?
The back glass — also called the rear window, rear windshield, or back windshield — is the tempered glass panel at the rear of your vehicle. Unlike the front windshield, which is made of laminated safety glass, the rear window is typically single-layer tempered glass. When it breaks, it shatters into hundreds of small pebble-like pieces and cannot be repaired — it must be fully replaced.
A damaged rear window is more than just an inconvenience. It compromises your vehicle’s structural integrity, exposes the interior to rain and theft, and in many cases disables your heated rear defroster and wiper system. In British Columbia, driving with a shattered back window may also result in a violation under the Motor Vehicle Act.
At Avenue Auto Glass, our certified technicians handle back glass replacement for all vehicle makes and models — from compact sedans and SUVs to pickup trucks, minivans, and luxury vehicles — serving Vancouver, Burnaby, Richmond, Surrey, North Vancouver, and the entire Lower Mainland.
Common causes of back glass damage
- Rocks and road debris kicked up on the highway (especially the Sea-to-Sky or Highway 1)
- Vandalism or vehicle break-ins — a frequent occurrence in Metro Vancouver
- Accidents and rear-end collisions
- Thermal stress from extreme temperature changes (cold BC mornings + defroster heat)
- Hail damage during Lower Mainland weather events
- Pressure cracks from improper loading in SUVs and hatchbacks
Don't leave a broken rear window overnight
An open rear window exposes your car to weather damage, theft, and water intrusion that can destroy upholstery, electronics, and structural components. Call us for emergency same-day back glass replacement in Vancouver.
All Vehicle Types Covered
Types of Rear Windows We Replace
Every vehicle’s rear glass configuration is different. Our technicians have hands-on experience with every type of back glass, including vehicles with integrated technology and electronics.
Sedan & Coupe Rear Windshields
Standard tempered glass replacement for two-door and four-door passenger vehicles, including models with integrated brake lights, antennas, and heating elements wired into the glass.
SUV & Crossover Back Glass
SUV rear windows often include a heated defroster grid, wiper motor attachment, and in some cases embedded antennas. We restore all electrical connections during replacement.
Truck Rear Windows (Single & Sliding)
Pickup truck back glass includes both fixed rear glass and sliding rear window configurations. We replace both types, including popular sliding-glass models on Ford, Chevrolet, RAM, and Toyota trucks.
Vehicles with Heated & Smart Glass Features
Modern vehicles integrate defogging grids, antennas, rear cameras, and parking sensors directly into the back glass. We ensure every electronic feature is fully functional after replacement.
Minivan Rear Windows
Minivan back glass can span the full width of the vehicle and may include split-glass configurations. We handle all minivan rear glass, including Honda Odyssey, Toyota Sienna, Chrysler Pacifica, and more.
Hatchback & Wagon Liftgate Glass
The rear glass in hatchbacks, wagons, and SUVs is integrated into the liftgate door. Replacement requires precise fitting to maintain weather sealing and full liftgate function.
Vancouver's Most Trusted Back Glass Replacement Shop
High Quality Glass Only
We never use low-grade aftermarket glass that can distort rear visibility or fail prematurely. Every back glass we install meets or exceeds original equipment standards for fit, clarity, and safety.
Fully Approved ICBC Repair Facility
As part of the ICBC Repair Network, we process your glass claim on-site. If you have comprehensive coverage, your back glass replacement may have zero out-of-pocket cost.
Heated Defroster Grid Restored
Many shops skip testing the defroster after installing new rear glass. We always reconnect and verify the heating grid, rear wiper attachment, and any antenna connections before you leave.
Lifetime Warranty on Installation
Every back glass replacement is covered by our nationwide lifetime warranty against installation defects. If anything goes wrong, we make it right — no questions asked.

Frequently Asked Questions
Still unsure? Call our team, we’re happy to assess your situation and give you an honest answer over the phone, free of charge.
Can a cracked rear window be repaired instead of replaced?
No. Unlike a front windshield — which is made of two layers of laminated glass and can sometimes be repaired — the rear window is made of single-layer tempered glass. When tempered glass cracks, the entire pane is compromised and must be fully replaced. There is no industry-standard repair method for cracked rear windows.
Does ICBC cover back glass replacement in BC?
Yes — if your vehicle has Optional Comprehensive coverage with ICBC, rear window damage is covered as a glass claim. Depending on your deductible, your out-of-pocket cost may be minimal or zero. We are a fully approved ICBC Repair Network facility and can open your glass claim directly at our shop — no trip to an ICBC service centre required.
How long does back glass replacement take?
Most rear window replacements at Avenue Auto Glass are completed within 1.5 to 3 hours, depending on vehicle type and parts availability. Vehicles with integrated heating elements require additional time to reconnect and test electrical connections. We offer courtesy rides while your vehicle is being serviced (conditions apply).
Will my heated rear defroster still work after replacement?
Yes — provided your new glass includes the defroster grid (which it should, as we source glass that matches your original specifications). Our technicians carefully reconnect the electrical terminals during installation and test the defroster before returning your vehicle. If your previous defroster had pre-existing faults, we will notify you before completing the job.
Do you offer mobile back glass replacement in Vancouver?
Yes, in select cases we offer mobile rear window replacement across Vancouver and nearby Lower Mainland communities. Mobile service depends on glass availability and technician scheduling. Call us at (604) 877-1177 to confirm whether your location and vehicle qualify for same-day mobile service.
Is it safe to drive with a cracked rear window?
Driving with a cracked or broken rear window is not recommended. Tempered glass that is already cracked can shatter completely with minor vibration, road shock, or temperature change — leaving your interior open to elements and theft. Additionally, a shattered rear window may impair visibility in your rearview mirror and could constitute a violation under the BC Motor Vehicle Act. We recommend calling us for same-day emergency replacement.
